TIP, when incerting the crankshaft back into the engine, it is paramount to ensure that the crankshaft ring is compressed, otherwise you will end up braking it. If you partially  incert the crank so the ring lines up with the recess in the crankcase. Now slip a wide band, shallow depth, tie wrap around the crank wed where the ring is incerted, pull the wrap to compress the ring,but not over tight that it will not slip off the web when you push the crankshaft  fully in place. The compressed ring will now slip into its position without catching on the crankcase.
